Ayurveda for muscle spasms


Muscle spasms

Imbalance: Vata dosha.

  1. Vata anulomana: Triphala churna or Gandharva haritaki.
  2. Dipana: cow's ghee + sunthi powder  + jaggery powder before meals.
  3. Balya: Yastimadhu kwath empty stomach twice a day.
  4. Shotha hara: local application of dukh dabav lepa followed by hot fomentation (for example using hot water bag or hot water tub bath).
  5. Snehana: local application of Shanti oil and /or Kundalini oil followed by hot fomentation (for example using hot water tub bath).
  6. Aahar: snigdha, laghu aahar.
  7. Vihaar: bed rest.


Dukh dabav lepa is a widely known lepa (external application) for painful muscle spasms.

A. Ingredients:

  1. Guggulu (Commiphora wightii)
  2. Meda (Litsea Glutinosa)
  3. Fitkari (Alum)
  4. Haridra (Âambe halad) (Curcuma amada)
  5. Ela (Elletaria cardamomum)
  6. Kundaru (Coccinia grandis)
  7. Revantchini (Rheum emodi)
  8. Gairik (red oxide of iron)
  9. Hirabol (Commiphoral mukul)
  10. Lodhra (Symplocos racemosus)
  11. Mayphal (Quercus incana)
  12. Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna)


B. It is useful in following conditions:

1. Muscle spasms, sprains, muscle injury

2. Leg pain, low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain.

3. Swelling associated with fractures.
